When it is an emergency

Some electrical problems can wait for a weekday booking. Others cannot, and you do not need to apologise for calling about them at night or at the weekend. Call us straight away if you notice any of these:

  • a burning or hot plastic smell from a socket, switch, light fitting or the switchboard;
  • sparking, crackling or buzzing from a fitting, or scorch marks that were not there before;
  • power off in your house when the neighbours still have theirs;
  • water coming through a ceiling near a light fitting, or into a meter box or outdoor socket;
  • an oven or cooktop element that will not switch off;
  • a tingle or shock from a tap, an appliance or anything metal.

Tell us what you are seeing when you call. It helps us bring the right parts and gives us a chance to tell you how to keep everyone safe until the electrician arrives.

While you wait for us

Switch off at the main switch

If it is safe to reach the switchboard and it is dry, turning off the main switch cuts power to the house wiring.

Keep away from fallen lines

Treat any line on the ground as live, keep people away and call your electricity supplier. The service line to the house stays live even with the main switch off.

Fire means 111

If there are flames or heavy smoke, get everyone out and call 111 first. Call us once the fire service has made it safe.

Unplug what you can

If one appliance seems to be the cause, switch it off at the wall and unplug it if you can do so safely.

Is it your house or the whole street?

If your neighbours are dark too, the fault is almost certainly on the network rather than in your wiring, and the lines company is who restores it. Vector's power outage page lets you check your address for a current outage, and it gives examples of what can cause one: vehicles hitting power poles, birds or balloons in the lines, and bad weather pushing tree branches into overhead lines. If anyone in the house relies on powered medical equipment, Vector recommends registering that with your electricity retailer.

Some of Westmere's network has changed recently: Auckland Transport's Point Chevalier to Westmere project, finished in 2025, included moving the Meola Road powerlines underground. Whatever feeds your street, the service line from your boundary to the meter and the wiring inside are the owner's responsibility, so if only your house is affected, call us.

After-hours questions

Do you really answer at night and at weekends?

Yes. Our electricians are available for call-outs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call 021 156 4005 and tell us what is happening.

My power came back on. Do I still need someone?

If a breaker tripped once and has held since, perhaps not. If it keeps tripping, or something smelt hot before it went off, book a visit so the cause is found. Our page on electrical fault finding in Westmere explains how we trace it.

Can you make it safe tonight and finish the repair later?

Often that is the sensible approach. At night the priority is to make the installation safe and get essential circuits back; a bigger repair, such as a replacement switchboard, can then be planned in daylight.

A tree branch is resting on the line to my house. What should I do?

Keep everyone clear and do not try to cut it free: WorkSafe's advice is never to cut or trim a tree that is touching power lines. Call your electricity retailer or Vector about the line. If the house wiring or meter box has been damaged, call us as well.

Do you come out to businesses after hours?

Yes. A shop, cafe or office that has lost power or has a dangerous fault can call us at any hour, just as a household can.
